Methods of Reading Support and Development: Experience of Ukrainian Libraries

Abstract: This article based on the recent years publications, shows the variety of modern methods of promoting books and reading, which the librarians implement in their activities. It is noted that the promotion of reading – promotion of children’s reading and high quality books for children are one of the key factors in society development. Most often, activities and projects related to the promotion of reading are implemented by libraries, public organisations, and foundations. The main goal of support for reading is to promote positive attitude on reading among the public, especially children and young people. The focus is on the fact that the methods and forms of book promotion have changed dramatically over the past few years, since modern young people are primarily consumers of computer products, individuals more focused on receiving virtual rather than verbal information. They are more receptive to information presented vividly, dynamically, and in a flexible way, so librarians are actively searching for non-standard forms, using new ideas in their traditional work. Verbal (narration, explanation, conversation, voice-over reading, observation, lecture, self-study with a book), visual (illustration, demonstration, self-study) and practical (exercises, practical, graphical, research work) methods which are used in the formation of schoolchildren’s reading interests, are stressed. It is noted that among practical methods, the method of projects occupies a special place. For example, a list of some projects implemented in the libraries of Ukraine in recent years is presented. It is noted that the interaction of librarians, schoolteachers, and parents is important in getting children involved in reading. A list of reading associations and clubs focused on the promotion of reading in libraries is made. It is noted that the prerequisite for effective popularisation of reading is the librarian’s ability to talk about the book in an accessible and interesting way to the reader of any age category.

Keywords: reading, libraries, reading promotion, reader’s interest, reading support methods, voice reading, project activities, interaction, family reading.
