The Ukrainian Book in the Corpus of Periodical Publications of the second half of the 19th century

Abstract: Periodicals of the second half of the nineteenth century had a major impact on the development of society’s awareness of Ukrainian books in that period. For the Dnipper Ukrainians, public access to Ukrainian books was severely restricted due to well-known historical conditions (governmental imperatives, censorship rules and bans, and financial constraints). Consequently, Galician newspapers, periodicals, bulletins, and literary supplements served as the primary source of information about books. To focus readers’ attention on book products and to promote them, these publications presented a significant amount of multidimensional (informational, analytical, journalistic) and multigenre (review, “conversation”, reports, bibliography, recommended reading lists, etc.) book information. These journals produced a great deal of multidimensional (informational, analytical, journalistic) and multigenre (review, “conversation”, reportage, bibliographies, recommended reading lists, etc.) book information in an effort to draw readers’ attention to book products. Publishers were incentivized to enhance circulation and intensify distribution of their publications due to the stimulating effect these materials had on readers’ interest. Among the periodicals whose editors considered information about books to be a mandatory component of their content, it is worth noting, first of all, cultural (literary, literary and scientific, literary and political) magazines. Such journals made up one third of Galicia’s press, which are the foremost of the periodicals whose editors deemed book information an essential part of their content. These newspapers and magazines editors saw it as one of their most important responsibilities to inform readers about books. It was meant to introduce new talents to readers, to influence the aesthetic tastes of general public, and enhance the audience’s knowledge of universal cultural values. The wide range of journalistic coverage surrounding the book aided in the development of national consciousness as well as the public’s growing interest in Ukrainian history, culture, and science.

Keywords: Ukrainian book, periodicals, media space, information product, book movement.
