Socio-communication Aspects of Ukrainian Book Culture in the Era of Digital and Social Transformations: Current Trends, Challenges and Prospects

Abstract: The article examines the modern characteristics of sociocultural aspects of book culture development. Information and communication factors and features of the social life of modern Ukrainian society are among them. The influencing factors are divided into two groups: those that correspond to world trends, and actually Ukrainian ones. The first group factors are: digitalization of the main phenomena and processes of book culture, cross-media and convergence of texts and publications; the growing influence of social networks and related changes in the nature of authorship and texts, the processes of book creation, publishing, distribution and sale; noticeable evolution of old and emergence of new reading practices. Among the specifically Ukrainian factors of influence, a combination of several phenomena is emphasized: the challenge of the formation of the latest Ukrainian culture simultaneously with reflection on post-totalitarian, post-genocide and post-colonial nature of very Ukrainian society which is creator of this culture, and the development of modern culture in conditions of genocidal war. Areas and issues that require further understanding have been identified. Such are modern features of the phenomenon of authorship and writing as a literary activity; communication component of publishing processes, book distribution; various institutional and informal reading practices; transformation of professional literary criticism, enlightenment, understanding of texts and literary phenomena and processes. In addition, it is important to outline the place and role of various actors in the book sphere in the current stage of socio-cultural processes, as well as, for further research, to determine the communication toolkit that is produced and actively used in this field.

Keywords: book culture, book sphere, digital transformations, reading practices, book communities, social networks.
