Adaptation of Ukrainian Refugees Abroad to the Conditions of Host Countries as a Polystructural Multi-Level System of Social Communications

Abstract: The article uses systemic social-communicative approach to examine the process of adaptation of Ukrainian refugees to the conditions of the countries where they stay. The polystructural aspect of the study is based on the analysis of the interrelationship of the influence of social communications of Ukrainian refugees in various spheres and with various subjects of the host states on the process of their adaptation. The study period of the process of adaptation of Ukrainian refugees is since February 2022 up to February 2024. Two types of structures of social communications in the process of adaptation of Ukrainian refugees are considered – sectoral and subjective. The sectoral structure of social communications reflects Ukrainian refugees’ activity in various life spheres in the countries where they stay. The subjective structure of social communications reflects their interaction with various subjects in the host countries. The organization of the stay of Ukrainian refugees at the international and national levels in the host states was carried out using hierarchical (vertical) and network (horizontal) social communications. These social communications were combined as needed in different combinations in different countries at different times. In the period since February 2022 to February 2024, there were changes in the sectoral priorities of Ukrainian refugees’ social communications in European host states. The main direction of these changes is related to the growth of employment of Ukrainian refugees in the national economies of their host countries. The employment of Ukrainian refugees in European countries is mostly influenced by the gender and age structure of the contingent of Ukrainian refugees, Ukrainians’ knowledge of the host country language, and the amount of social assistance provided to refugees. The employment of Ukrainian refugees in the economy of Poland is the highest one, and the employment of Ukrainian refugees in the economy of Germany is one of the lowest in Europe.

Keywords: refugees, information, labor market, social adaptation, social communications, labor migrants.
