Documents on Academician Yu. Shevchenko’s Participation in Polish Conferences on Solid Mechanics

Abstract: The purpose of the work is to carry out a source-scientific analysis of archival documents on the international activities of the leading mechanical scientist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yuri Mykolayovych Shevchenko, which are kept in his personal archive at the Institute for Archival Studies of V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, and on the basis of archival sources, to investigate the participation of the Ukrainian scientist in the discussion of current scientific issues during the solid bodymechanics forums held in Poland in 1988, 1994, and 1996. The methodology of work is based on the principles of scientificity, historicism, objectivity and comprehensiveness, universal methods of scientific analysis and synthesis, and a set of methods of historical research – historical comparative, retrospective, problem-chronological, source studies, archival studies, as well as content analysis for the study of documents. The scientific novelty of the work is in the fact that, for the first time, a valuable source complex of little-known archival sources from the personal collection of academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yuri Mykolayovych Shevchenko has been introduced into scientific circulation, which will make possible the study of the researcher’s international scientific activity and his cooperation with European and the world scientists. Conclusions. The article found out that academician Yuri Mykolayovych Shevchenko’s personal collection contains a set of documents about his participation in the XXVII, XXX and XXXI Polish conferences on solid state mechanics, which reveal his cooperation with the world’s leading scientists, his active work on popularization of the Ukrainian thermomechanics’ research achievements, which contributed to the growth of the authority of Ukrainian science in the world.
