Personal Files and Lists of Students and Teachers as a Source for Studying Repressions in the Sumy Region in the 1930s

Abstract: The study aims to trace the fate of people repressed by the Soviet authorities, on the basis of a combination of personal files, lists of students and teachers, criminal case files, and other documents from archival collections, as wellas using studies already published. The methodological basis for the research is the principles of historicism, objectivism, and a combination of systemic and regional approaches aimed at scientific and critical analysis of a set of historical sources. At various stages of the research work, the methods of analysis and synthesis, systematization, periodization, and critical analysis of sources wereapplied. The scientific novelty is in the fact that for the first time the personal files of students and teachers became the object of a systematic study aimedat revealing information about persons who were repressed by Soviet authorities or were relatives of so-called “enemies of the people”. The author attempted to create a special database of students and teachers in the Sumy region on the basis of personal files and lists containing biographical information. Revealing of information about relatives of repressed persons is also important for genealogical research. Conclusions. A large number of young people were subjected to political persecution by Soviet authorities because they had a "socially hostile" background: they came from wealthy peasant families or their relatives joined anti-Soviet armies in 1918-1920. A promising area for further researchis the study of personal and criminal files in other archives of Ukraine, whichwill allow to expand the information about repressed persons. The use of the secases will also make it possible to determine the specifics of the Soviet government’s repressive policy against students and teachers.
