Mobile Applications in the Context of Modern Reading Practices

Abstract: The article explores technological transformations in modern reading/cultural practices under the influence of information and communication technologies development. It identifies and summarizes the current characteristics of socio-cultural aspects of the development of reading culture and the role of mobile technologies in this process. Sociological research is analyzed, which indicates fundamental changes in reading practices and in modern reading culture specifically, related to the digitalization of key phenomena and processes in the cultural sphere and the rapid development of mobile technologies. Mobile reading applications and their functional content are examinedin detail. A typology of such reading applications is proposed: readers, reading tracking apps, and tools for reading practices. Positive dynamics in the use of mobile reading applications are identified based on download data, which indicates that they are of great demand among users. Users reviews are analyzed, providing insight into the relevance of such a channel for promoting reading. The study and systematization of the most popular applications among users revealed the following trends: the “enrichment” of reading with additional practices and corresponding tools, which has become a significant factor in the book market; and the popularity of hybrid formats for accessing content. These trends are confirmed by the multifunctionality of most applications – from content consumption to book-related communication. The conclusion is drawn that mobile reading applications are designed to simplify, stimulate, and organize reading practices and act, on the one hand, as a market response to reading demands and needs, and on the other hand, as a factor in the evolution of book culture.
