Cinematography in Post-Truth Era and Its Influence on Mass Consciousness

Abstract: The paper presents analysis of how post-truth manifests itself in cinematography in the late 20 th – early 21 st centuries. Special characteristics of its influence are examined in terms of mass consciousness formation and probable consequences of this influence. Certain post-truth features in cinematography became apparent in this time: great quantity of movies in genres of science fiction, action and fantasy which led to the unprecedented heyday of film and media franchises, and notable increase of trend to update the past in historic films. Hedonistic and compensatory functions which art has been performed, common for all state authorities сommitment to want people to be quiet and manageable, film producers’ dreams on huge box-office, relative economic stability, and development of digital technologies, were the factors which being superposed, formed a resultant wave of greater strength. Althought single science fiction movies and ones whose creators felt too free while operating with historic material were shooting much earlier, it was at the end of the 20 th – beginning of the 21 st centuries that social conditions and mass consciousness parameters have shaped and made possible another kind of reception which became dominant for mass spectator, and in its turn, displayed important features of modern mass consciousness. The main characteristic of the post-truth cinema, and rather dangerous one, is canceling of reality, or at least, its notable updating. Indirect consequences of the analyzed phenomenon could be: the strengthening of escapist mood, moral relativism, social indifference, and anomy, especially among youth generation, and vulgarization of images of the past, certain epochs and states could make a favorable basis for superficial and deep manipulations which could influence people’s ideas on desired way of social life and public ideals.
