Libraries in Combating Destructive Influences in the Social Communications Sphere

Abstract: The article provides an in-depth analysis of the fumction libraries performin countering misinformation and enhancing public information literacy. Libraries are essential institutions called to preserve, disseminate knowledge, and foster critical thinking among the public. One of the significant challenges they face today is the rapid spread of fake news, misinformation, and manipulative content that can shape and distort public opinion. This research explores how libraries can leverage modern tools and methods to detect and combat fake news, as well as to develop users’ critical thinking skills and media literacy. The focus is on how libraries can help shapean objective worldview by empowering citizens with the skills required to beable to analyze and evaluate the credibility of information they encounter. The article reviews international studies, highlighting best practices and successful strategies used by libraries worldwide to combat misinformation and promote information literacy. These strategies include information literacy programs, seminars, workshops, and collaboration with media to provide the public with accurate information. Key strategies involve turning libraries into hubs of critical thinking, where users can access verified sources and learn how to distinguish factual content from false or misleading information. The research also examines the opportunities and challenges libraries encounter in maintaining public access to reliable information. Among the challenges identified is the need for libraries to continuously adapt to rapid changes in the media landscape and technology, which requires updating collections, improving methods, and enhancing access to modern digital resources. The article further delves into various approaches to studying fake news based on its content, style, method of dissemination, and origin.
