Library Collections of Alfred Rosenberg’ Ideological Services in the Third Reich: Acquisition, Content, Use

Abstract: The main purpose of the publication is to provide a general outline of the libraries collections created in the 1930s and the first half of the 1940s by the services of the Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg as part of the National Socialist Workers’ Party (NSDAP) or outside the NSDAP system, but closely related to it in terms of their functions, tasks, and activities. Accordingly, the research aims were to define the bases for the creation of these services’ library collections, their purpose and functions, to conduct a general analysis of their composition, to highlight the ways of their replenishment and the connections between individual collections, and to outline the ways of using these library collections. The research methodology is based on general scientific principles and methods of scientific research, particularly on the principles of historicism and objectivity, structural-functional and comparative analysis and synthesis, and problematic, thematic, chronological, and bibliographical methods. The novelty of the study is determined by the fact that, despite the existence of several publications somehow related to the subject of the research, many its aspects remain unexplored, such as the determination of the general composition of the printed collections of A. Rosenberg’ services in the NSDAP, ways of their replenishment, exchange with other structures, etc. Conclusions. Almost every Rosenberg service in the NSDAP created specialized collections of printed publications in the course of its activities, which were eventually formalized as service libraries, and their thematic focus corresponded to the profile of the service (foreign policy and international relations, the ideology of National Socialism, anti-Semitism, history and archaeology, etc.). However, a number of issues still remain poorly researched, such as the full structure and content of these libraries collections, the issue of their cataloging, and the fate of those collections that were lost.
