The Emotional World of the Ukrainian Middle Ages: Source Potential of Manuscripts of the 12th-16th centuries from the Collection of the Institute of Manuscript

Abstract: The article reveals the informational potential of manuscripts of the 12th-16 th centuries from the collection of the Manuscript Institute for the study of the emotional world of a person in the Ukrainian Middle Ages. The article focuses on manuscripts of the 12 th-16 th centuries, created on Ukrainian territory. Three important groups of sources have been singled out and analyzed. The largest group consists of translated texts, which are a potential source for forming an idea about the emotional world (of the importance of certain emotions, their correctness/incorrectness, the nature of specific emotions and, in general, all other mental attitudes). The second group includes original texts that are products of the Ukrainian Middle Ages and directly characterize the emotional world of this era and region, in particular, and demonstrate whether the attitudes and ideas present in the translated texts were assimilated by the Ukrainian medieval society. There are only 4 original monuments: Kyiv Caves Paterycon, Prayers of St. Cyril of Turivsky for seven days of the week, three polemical articles of the 16 th century of anti-Catholic content, Synodyk of the Golden Michael Monastery. Among them, Paterycon is of exceptional importance as a monument that consists of texts written by the monks of the Cave (Pechersk) monastery and about the ascetics of this monastery, and therefore it reflects the emotional realities of the Ukrainian Middle Ages and the ideas about emotions that the Pechersk fathers were the bearers of. Paterycon has more than 450 explicit mentions of the emotions of sadness and tears, joy, fear, anger and surprise, and a number of non-verbal messages about manifestations of the emotional sphere. Entries in books that contain an emotional element are significant: a manifestation of emotions, an emotional attitude towards someone or something, a fixed idea about emotions. The records testify to gratitude to God and joy in connection with the completion of a long and difficult work on the creation of a book, a favorable attitude towards specific persons. It is clear from records that fear of God was favorably evaluated in the16 th century. Manuscripts bring us a lot of records that testify to the emotional connection between spouses and between parents and children.
