Bibliographic activity of Marta Tarnavska in the research of English-language Ukrainian literature

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to highlight and analyze the bibliographic activity of Marta Teodoziivna Tarnavska in the study of English-language, which was published outside of Ukraine during 1964–2010. The research methodology consists in the application of general scientific research methods (systemic approach, observation, description, comparison, analysis and synthesis) and special scientific methods (historical approach, bibliographic method, bibliographic functional, analytical-thematic, structural-typological methods). Scientific novelty. Biographical information about M. Tarnavska is presented, her bibliographic works and publications on the study of English-language translations from Ukrainian literature abroad were systematized by chronology and analyzed by content, aswell as critical reviews of Ukrainian-American scientists on the presented works, were collected. Conclusions. For more than twenty years, Marta Tarnavska worked hard on the idea of creating a comprehensive scientific bibliography of Ukrainian literature in English translations abroad. From the oldest works at 1890 before works 1989. The bibliography consists of four books, in total: 369 books and brochures, 4,328 articles and references from magazines and anthologies, 1,207 translations of poetry, short stories, dramatic works, and 763 book reviews. The number of translations from Ukrainian literature into English, published during 1890–1965 and recorded by Tarnavska in books one and twoth of the mentioned bibliography, was smalls compared to the number of materials systematized in the third and fourth books, for 1966–1989. Thus, in the second half of the 20th century thereis a greater saturation of the English-speaking audience abroad with translations from Ukrainian literature. Marta Tarnavska carried out a long-term study, systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of a huge volume of bibliographic information about the Ukrainian literature abroad. Tarnavska’s bibliographic works allow the English-speaking reader to become more familiar with Ukrainian fiction and scientific research in the field of literature, lay the groundwork for further research on inter-literary connections, and contribute to the popularization of Ukrainian literature in the world.
