Monitoring the Coverage of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in Politico Europe

Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the results of the monitoring of materials cover the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, published on the popular English-language Belgian website Politico Europe in the period 2022-2024. The problems, dynamics and nature of the coverage of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on the website, as well as the reaction of the European Union society and politicians, and the international community to the war in Ukraine in the publications of Politico Europe contributors, were studied. During the content analytical study, 381 selected publications posted on the politico.eu website for the period from February 24, 2022 to the present, were analyzed. The monitoring technology assumes that the discovered publications that correspond to the research topic are supplemented with an abstract, indexed according to the current thematic classifier, and entered into the database with the article’s full bibliographic description, in the appropriate fields. In addition, analysts determine the tone of the article regarding the object of the study, in our case – Ukraine. With the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the Belgian publication Politico Europe significantly increased the number of publications about Ukraine. The main reason was that because of a full-scale war in the center of Europe, attention to Ukrainian topics in the European information space increased significantly in general and in the governing and political circles of the EU in particular. The journalists of Politico Europe actively comment on all the events in the warring Ukraine, but the detailed analysis of the international situation prevails, which is carried out by a fairly widerange of authors, and in addition to full-time journalists, there are specialized experts, scientists, representatives of EU governing bodies, and politicians areamong them. The perception of Ukraine in the publication under study is formed on the basis of real events in our country and their consequences, which affected the general political situation in the EU and the world. One of the main narratives tracked by Politico Europe is the dependence of the situation in Ukraine on economic and military aid from the EU and the USA. The Politico Europe publications often talk about the volume of arms supplies, journalists openly criticize the leaders of the EU countries for their indecision in supporting Ukraine, focusing on delays in the supply of arms and insufficient economic sanctions against Russia. At the same time, the publications on the website strengthen the narrative about the leading role of the USA in these issues and the secondary role of the EU.
