Analysis of the Problems of the World Scientific Research on the Digitalization of Historical and Cultural Heritage

Abstract: The purposes of the study are to analyze the problems of scientific researchon the digitization of historical and cultural heritage using scientometric databases which index scientific texts and collect metadata about scientific works (harvesters), and are widely used in the world, to identify the main areas of research on the specified issues, and to outline the most promising ones. The research methodology is based on the methods of historicism, comparison, system, component and graphical analysis, synthesis, and forecasting, which were applied to information, collected from open sources on the Internet, mainly scientometric databases. Scientific novelty. A bibliometric analysis of publications and works that investigate the issues of digitizing historical and cultural heritage in the world over the past 25 years, has been carried out, and characteristic quantitative indicators have been determined in the specified historical period regarding the main directions of these studies, their species composition, language, geography, activity of scientists in various regions, and the availability of the created work. Trends in expanding the issues of scientific research on digitizing historical and cultural heritage in the future, have been identified. The role of Ukrainian scientists in digitizing historical and cultural heritage has been characterized. The correspondence of the obtained results to the search query and the influence of the repeatability of information in different sources on the overall result of the bibliometric study, have been noted. The quality of preparation of metadata about historical and cultural heritage objects that are automatically transferred to integration resources, as wellas areas for improving the services provided by these resources to researchers, have been investigated. Conclusions. The results of this study prove that the scientists’ interest in the issues concern digitization of historical and cultural heritage has been constantly growing over the past 15 years. Special attentionin these studies is paid to theoretical general issues related to the existence of historical and cultural heritage in digital form and to the impact of digital technologies on the activities of institutions that preserve such heritage. At the same time, there is a lack of applied research on the implementation of digital transformation of these institutions’ activities. An important placein the research into digitization of historical and cultural heritage is occupied by issues of 2 D digitization, storage of digital copies and creation of electronic information resources to provide access to these copies, as well as metadata formats for bibliographic description, cataloguing and exchange in electronic form, which are the basis of information retrieval systems that operate as part of automated library information systems. The number of studies of 3 D technologies has significantly increased, in particular ones of digitization of historical and cultural heritage objects, 3 D modulation, 3 D printing. The promising ones include multispectral scanning and analysis of historical and cultural heritage objects; virtual restoration; reconstruction of 3 D models for morphological measurements, surface geometry, maps of degradation processes; virtual archives, libraries and museums with interactive activities and augmented reality.

Keywords: historical and cultural heritage, digitization, bibliometrics, scientometric database.
