The Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin and commemoration Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky in Germany in 1934-1935

Abstract: After the death of Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky, the scientific community in Ukraine and abroad actively responded to this tragedy. Memorial materials were published in scientific journals and periodicals to commemorate the outstanding historian, public and civic actor Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky. Memorial academies were organized by leading Ukrainian scientific centers and higher educational institutions abroad, and famous Ukrainian and foreign scholars delivered mourning speeches at them. Memorial events dedicated to Mykhailo Hrushevsky were held at the Ukrainian Scientific Institutein Warsaw (Poland), the Ukrainian Free University in Prague (Czechoslovakia), the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin (Germany), etc. In Germany, commemorative events were organized by the Ukrainian Scientific Institutein Berlin. The purpose of the article is to highlight the activities of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin on commemoration Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky in Germany in 1934-1935. During 1934-1935, the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin organized memorial academies in honor of Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky. On December 7, 1934, a Mourning Academyin honor of Professor Mykhailo Hrushevsky was organized at the Ukrainian Scientific Institute, during which reports were delivered by the director of the Institute, Professor, Doctor Ivan Mirchuk, Associate Professor, Doctor Borys Krupnytsky, Doctor Mykhailo Antonovych, Professor, Doctor Zenon Kuzelya, and Associate Professor Viktor Leontovych. On January 16, 1935, employees of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin organized an international Academy in memory of Mykhailo Hrushevsky in the premises of the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin. During the Academy, reports were delivered by the Institute’s curator Professor Dr. Anton Palme, and Associate Professor Dr. Borys Krupnytsky. The commemorative academies in December 7, 1934, and January 16, 1935, were covered on the pages of the institute’s publications Ukrainische Kulturberichte des Ukrainischen Wissenschaftlichen Institutes in Berlin and News from the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin. The events of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin ensured the publication of materials dedicated to Mykhailo Hrushevsky in leading German scientific journals: Jahrbücher für Kultur und Geschichte der Slaven, Zeitschriftfür Osteuropäische Geschichte, Osteuropa, etc. A number of German periodicals published articles dedicated to Mykhailo Hrushevsky, as well as reviews of commemorative events in his memory.
