Research Support Tools in Libraries: a Systematic Review of Key Projects

Section: Libraries – centers of scientific, information and communication development

Abstract: The article analyzes the structure and content of research support services presented on the websites of the top 10 academic libraries according to QS World University Rankings 2026. It identifies the optimal set of informational, methodological, advisory, and sociocultural services required by the research audience. The role of digital library services, such as bibliography managers, scientometric databases, publication platforms, and research data repositories, in navigating the information array is substantiated, allowing for organizing sources, tracking current trends, analyzing citations, identifying scientific connections between authors, and even predicting promising research directions based on machine learning algorithms. The author emphasises the presence of institutional repository, research data management, digital tools for scientists, research software, virtual research laboratories, virtual services, online consultations, chatbots, administrative support, etc., in the structure of the library’s research services, and all these components are in demand by researchers. The importance of digital awareness, Internet culture, fact-checking, is stressed. An optimal model of interaction between libraries and researchers has been identified, and it involvesa comprehensive approach to the research lifecycle, expert assistance, publication support and open access, educational and digital literacy services, infrastructure for publications, glossaries for unification of library and information science terminology. It is argued that scientific and university libraries in Ukraine should focus on a service model that is an integral part of research ecosystem, provides comprehensive digital and analytical services, supports all stages of the research cycle, has qualified specialists in new specializations, and actively works with Open Science and data management. This will allow Ukrainian libraries to move closer to the models of the world’s leading universities, improve the quality of research, and integrate into the global scientific space.
