Kyiv Newspaper Vidrodzhennya as a Source for Studying the History of the Ukrainian Hetman State in 1918 (from the Collection of Ukrainian Newspapers of the Period of Ukrainian Revolution 1917-1921 in V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine)Section: Library institutions in Ukraine and the world: challenges and requirements of the present day Abstract: The materials of the newspaper Vidrodzhennia as a source on the history of the Ukrainian state have been analyzed, and the issues addressed in newspaper publications on this topic, have been identified. The goal of the research is to use qualitative and quantitative characteristics of newspaper publications to reveal their informative potential for studying the history of Ukrainian statein 1918. Methodology and method. Methodological principles are positivist approaches to scientific knowledge, principles of historicism, objectivity, systematic. The authors used source analysis and synthesis, comparative, quantitative, and statistical methods for their implementation. The scientific novelty. The paper is the first attempt in Ukrainian historiography to consider the newspaper Vidrodzhennya as a historical source for studying the Ukrainian Hetman State history to identify newspaper publications’ subject matter on this issue and to characterize and evaluate published materials. Conclusions. An analytical and synthetic characterizations of newspaper materials as sources on the history of the Ukrainian state were carried out. This approach made it possible to find out the composition and subject matter of the newspaper. The leading topics of the newspaper were specific measures of the Hetman’s government and its local structures regarding the reform of state power, the socio-economic system, land reform, the financial and credit system, and industry. An important place in the newspaper is occupied by materials that reflect public authorities’ work in forming an independent Ukrainian army, pursuing an active foreign policy, and recognizing Ukraine as a sovereign state in the international arena. Of particular interest are newspaper articles introducing the Ukrainian language in primary, secondary, and higher education, government agencies, science, and cultural institutions. The newspaper’s editorial board intensified the Ukrainian public’s efforts to fight against anti-Ukrainian forces’ attempts to slow down the formation and development of Ukrainian education, science, and culture. Keywords: Vidrodzhennya newspaper, source, subject matter, authors, classification, statehood, Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky, Ukrainian State.
