Techological Transformation in the Library: from Bibliographication to Scientometrics

Abstract: The article is devoted to the development of high technologies in the library in the transition to the knowledge society. This article analyzes the stages of development of high technologies in library and information activities – from bibliographing to science metrics. Main tasks of how to transform science metrics into a system-forming element of scientific communication are determined. For thousands years libraries were collecting, processing and distributing documents in order to satisfy information needs of users, and always could find an adequate responses to the challenges of a changing society. But today, in the age of the formation of a «digital environment», the library sphere goes through a special period – a gradual shift away of publishers from traditional paper carriers. This crisis requires urgent solutions to adapt the library to the requirements of this «paperless environment». Therefore, reviewed stages of transformational changes in the functioning of the library institutions by implementation of high technologies on VNLU example are topical because they point not only the way to overcome the crisis, but also how to output them to a new, more qualitative and dominant level in the social communications system. The survey gives conclusions regarding the gradual development of high technologies by major libraries of Ukraine. The study notes about need of implementation of elements of intellectual processing means of arrays of electronic library and information resources in order to pick out of new knowledge that is not contained in them in explicit kind.
