Pryimak Iryna Establishing and development of public libraries in the second half of the 19th century (Through the example of Zhytomyr Russian Public Library)Abstract: The second half of the 19th century was marked by a number of positive changes in socioeconomic, political and cultural life of the Russian Empire in general and particularly in Volyn. Formation of public and community libraries system, that at that time were actively founded by officials and cultural figures, is the example of cultural development of South West region. At that particular time the largest public libraries were opened in the cities of Ukraine, such as Kamianets-Podilskyi, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Kherson, Chernihiv. The issue of establishment and development of public libraries system in South West region in the mid and late 19th century remains under investigated in the scientific literature. This article attempts to study and present to a wide audience raised question; to demonstrate the process of the establishment of the libraries during this period using Zhytomyr Russian Public Library as an example. In the course of research it was discovered, that public library in Zhytomyr became an important cultural center of Volyn after its opening. Gradually its material support improved, number of readers increased, different cultural and educational activities were carried out there. Results of scientific inquiry expand knowledge on the history of librarianship, vividly depict this process and widely illustrate it with archival materials.
