Transformation of Village Libraries in Ukraine into Informational, Sociocultural and Communicative Community’s Centers

Abstract: The article highlights current issues of village libraries functioning in terms of social-economic reforms in Ukraine. Gradual change of libraries’ functions has caused by today challenges is followed, including the creation and development of a new model of village libraries, the essence of which is to move from functioning in the «stacks» format to the «information and cultural center for the community» format, which provides information and communications support socially significant activities, preservation and enhancement of human and national cultural values. The article determines that the computerization of village libraries is the most important factor in its survival in the terms of economic and social transformations. The article also emphasizes that under conditions of limited funding, computerization of village libraries in Ukraine goes on due to its active participation in international information programs and projects. The conclusion is that village libraries in Ukraine turn into a kind of information gate for local communities by offering innovative services called to disseminate education, cultural, business and other knowledges and become the centers of interaction with central and local authorities, spiritual communication and exchange of views.
