Abstract: The necessity of representation of library institutions in social networks, including the network facebook.com was proved. Annual monitoring of V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine pages was realized to determine the relationship between the number of followers and the quality of content on facebook.com. The basic methods of giving information about V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine were analysed. An attempt was made to distinguish between «own content» and «original content». In particular it was determined that own content could be original and unoriginal (with reference to the official web site of V. I. Vernadsky National Library). Main reasons for decrease of popularity of a page on facebook.com were characterized using the example of a page of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library «Service of informational and analytical support of state authorities». It was emphasized that in maintaining a Facebook page one should take into account the specific of the network which is that only those followers could get news from the pages who has been responding some materials (setting preferences, making comments or reposts) during a certain time (the last 2–3 weeks).
