Contribution of the Ukrainian Teachers Into the Development of the Ukrainian Studies at the Schools of the Diaspora of Canada 1918–1939s

Abstract: The article enlightens the history of the formation and development of the Ukrainian school education in the Diaspora of Canada in the period between the two world wars. The period of the second wave of Ukrainian emigration to Canada was marked by thegrowth in quantitative and qualitative terms of educational institutions. The impetus for this was not only newcomers, national conscious Ukrainians and the adopting the law about banning of bilingual schools in Canada in 1916. The only way to preserve the Ukrainian language and culture was the formation of private schools. So the importance of introduction of the Ukrainian studies in the educational process for national-patriotic education of the rising generation is proved in the article. It is shown the level of public activity and initiative of the Ukrainians in building their own schools in emigration, the ways of organizing activity of teaching and educational institutions, the achievements of these institutions in the sphere of education. The work of the Ukrainian teachers in the Canadian state schools is also described. Lessons of Ukrainian teachers in public schools were conducted after the obligatory training hours on Saturdays or on vacation. Separately taught «native school» teachers in people’s houses, etc., their work was paid by the contributions of parents, community organizations or parishes. In the 20–30s the significant contribution to the preservation of the Ukrainian language was made by the Ukrainian houses and schools by them, acting under the aegis of the society «Ukrainian Labour-Farmer Temple». To coordinate the educational process the committees of teachers were formed. The tasks set by the teachers are noted, that mainly aimed at keeping of the Ukrainian traditions in the Diaspora. Thanks to the conscientious work of teachers in the Diaspora children could learn the Ukrainian language, literature, history and culture of own people.
