Parents’ Media Education as a Component of Media Education Space

Abstract: The article presents the study of the problem of parents’ media education as an important component in creating a coherent media education system in Ukraine. Formation of parents’ media literacy and media culture is considered as an important factor in the early socialization of the child, his/her protection against negative information influences and effective information security of the family and society.The sociological researches on problems and opportunities of parents’ media literacy are analyzed. Generally, technical tools (applications, programs, technological options for browsers and operating systems, etc.) available for parents to exercise control over the use of open content by children of different ages, are described.The perspective role of libraries as potential hubs in the implementation of non-formal media education projects for parents in Ukraine was emphasized. The need to develop and approve special library programs for parents’ and adults’ media culture and information literacy is substantiated.National and world (Dutch, Austrian, German, Swedish and American) experience in successful implementation of projects, programs, courses, etc. in the system of parents’ media education are systematized. The ways of forming the parents’ media culture are generalized.The conclusion is made about the need for parents to consider the age, individual and other children’s characteristics that influence their behaviour in the virtual world.The thesis that the formed media and communication culture of parents (setting rules, control and personal example), rather than prohibitions and restrictions on the use of gadgets and Internet technologies, is the basis for ensuring formation of children's media culture was proved
