Global Public’ Solidarity Actions with Ukrainian People during the Russia-Ukraine War: Classification and Special Characteristics

Abstract: The paper presents study of global public’ solidarity actions with Ukrainian people, which took place since the very beginning of the war in late February up to the late June in 2022. The study is of summarizing and resumptive nature and the classification of the actions is offered. Criteria for the classification are: number of participants/actors, level of organization, character of actions, forms of charity, actions directions. Each kind of actions is followed by cases from mass media reports, and it makes the conclusion on exceptional diversity of ways used by world public to manifest solidarity with Ukrainians, strongly evident one. The author conducts brief comparison in certain points of world public solidarity actions with Ukrainian people with Spanish one during the Civil war in 1936–1939. Distinctive features of the latter were high level of organization, large number of people who fough for the republican Spain, absence of actions aimed at intetrnational exclusion of Nazist Germany. As to the former, it is represented with a huge number of significative, symbolic, and performance actions, either high variety of ways to display one’s solidarity publicly, or remarkable creativeness in its using. These characteristics could be resulted from individualization which is a feature of modern time and goes hand in hand with the idea of one’s own life preciousness, and high variability of personal assessment of situation or event, and forms of personal response to it. Postmodern art and its genres, digital technologies and communicative, culture innovation related to them, influenced this form of public activity as well.
