The Great Black Sea Region in the Context of the War in Ukraine: Modern Realities and Prospects

Abstract: Extrapolating a look into the future of the Black Sea region, it is worth noting that Ukraine, having withstood and recovered from the full-scale invasion of Russia, has the potential to become a key Black Sea country with sufficient firepower and state potential to rebuild and stabilize the Black Sea region in the broader European security order. For the future security framework of the Black Sea region, several states currently play a key role. Among them, first of all, it is worth mentioning Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, which, against the background of the expansion of the Russian Federation in the cases of Ukraine and Georgia, should find new meanings of their own cooperation. Previous forms of integration in the Black Sea, such as the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) or GUAM, had either only an economic motive for cooperation (BSEC) or were not very effective as (GUAM). That is why the issues of security cooperation among the Black Sea countries within the framework of local associations that will cooperate with NATO or be part of it, are urgently needed. The article analyzes the changes that took place in the Black Sea region as a result of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. An assessment of the positions of the Black Sea countries in conditions of instability is given. Forecasts regarding the future development of the Black Sea region are presented.

Keywords: Black Sea region, foreign policy, aggression of the Russian Federation, energy transit.
