The Student Library of the Kyiv Theological Seminary (History of Formation, Systematic Composition and Current State)

Abstract: The purpose of the article is a historical overview of the foundations of the student library of the Kyiv Theological Seminary in 1870–1917, the main sources of its acquisition. Systematic analysis of the book collection of the student library, which is stored in the library collections and historical collections of the Institute of Bibliology. The research methodology consists in the application of concrete-historical and historical-system methods, which allowed to study the history of formation and functioning of the Student Library of the Kyiv Theological Seminary, to analyze the systemic composition of the library. The scientific novelty is to reveal the history of the formation of the book collection and the principles of functioning of this library, which has not been conducted before. An overview of previous scientific achievements in the history of the seminary is given. A new source base of research has been involved, in particular, information on the catalog of books, which reveals the composition of the student library fund, has been put into scientific circulation.The attribution of books from this book collection was carried out, the historical location of books was reproduced in accordance with the ciphers preserved from the time of the library’s existence, and the system of book placement was analyzed. An electronic catalog of books of this collection has been created. Conclusions.The student library at the Kyiv Theological Seminary existed mainly due to donations from the seminary students. Teachers of seminaries and academies, church figures, and magazine editors often donated books to the library. The main purpose of its existence is to teach students to read instructive works, expand their horizons. New books were purchased for the student library, approved by the pedagogical council, so the book collection includes books of the XIX – early XX centuries in various fields of knowledge, with a predominance of religious literature. Kyiv Theological Seminary played an important role in training students of the Kyiv Theological Academy, as well as provided a thorough education for future priests.The student library contributed to the comprehensive development of the reading interests of the students of the seminary.
