The newspapers of Ukrainian prіsoners in camps of Germany and Austro-Hungary 1915–1918: forming history, maintenance, thematic saturation (After of materials of newspapers saved in the Department of newspapers assets Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine)

Abstract: The unique collection of newspapers, which include newspapers went beyond Ukraine in 1898–2016 years, saved in the Department of newspaper assets Vernadsky National Library. A large corpus of the newspapers sources covering the activities of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine (Soiuz vyzvolennia Ukrainy (SVU)) has been studied. Based on this research, the role of the SVU in the processes of the education and accommodation to the National culture applied to the Russian army prisoners of war were explored in their full complexity and contradictory character. Тhe authors introduces many names of outstanding publicists of yet unknown in Ukraine into scientific circulation. Major problems of camp publications, especially of the period after the Second World War are outlined. The results of this exploration are new and are presented for the first time. The Union for the Liberation of Ukraine an organization of Ukrainian émigrés from the Russian Empire has been established in Austria-Hungary and Germany during the First World War as an organization representing Ukrainians under Russian domination. These prisoners were kept in the camps in Austria (Freistadt) and Germany (Rastatt, Salzwedel and Wetzlar). Laying down broad plans for educational work, publishing and setting up special committees for different activities. Various newspapers were established, including «Rozsvit» (printed in Rastatt), «Vil’ne Slovo» (Salzwedel), «Hromads’ka Dumka» (Wetzlar) and «Rozvaha» (Freistadt).
