Сучасні тенденції розвитку наукової функції бібліотек Анотація: The article examines libraries activities in formation of ecological culture in Ukrainein the process of libraries gradual transformation into modern information centers and social centers of public initiatives for the realization of the goals of sustainable development. It was noted that Ukrainian libraries fulfill the task of forming an ecological culture among all age, social and professional groups of the population within the framework of informal education. It is emphasized that within the scope of such functions, library institutions take a direct part in the formation of the information ecological space, become nodal information centers that not only provide free and equal access to global information resources in the environmental field, concentrate and distribute information fl ows in the field of ecology, but also become eco-centers and producers of their own informational eco-products. The main areas of libraries activity in the structure of environmental education and upbringing are analyzed, in particular, work according to complex programs and target projects, continuous environmental education using mass and individual forms of work, library being as an eco-education point for users and employees, scientific and methodological activities of libraries for studying information needs of users, etc.The participation of Ukrainian libraries in the global project Green Library to transform libraries and the surrounding library space into their own eco-environments (energy conservation, sorting and processing of garbage, frugal use of natural resources, etc.), is especially examined. The role of public libraries in the development of green tourism in Ukraine, as wellas the forms of cooperation with local authorities and the population of territorial communities in solving the complex task of forming a tourism-attractive image for regions, are highlighted. The experience of environmental activities of certain foreign library institutionsis analyzed. Conclusions that the environmental activities of libraries actively contribute to the formation of ecological culture, help in solving urgent problems of environmental protection, and contribute to the education of citizens in a careful attitude to nature, weremade. It is claimed that the popularization of the experience of environmental activities of libraries will contribute to increasing of their role in the social communications system.
